Too many vendors conduct what is euphemistically called a National Criminal Database search which is neither national nor thorough enough to be considered a criminal search. It is in fact a database. Primary source record research includes the forty-two states plus the District of Columbia that offer access to state criminal records through the State Police or other state agency for employment purposes. In the remaining eight states, criminal research must be conducted at the county level.
